Tim Austen

Tim Austen has practised extensively both as a Landscape Architect and Landscape Contracts Manager in Ireland and the UK since completing his Masters degree in Landscape Ecology, Design and Management at Wye College (Imperial College, London) in 1997.  Furthering a desire to bring a fresh approach to his discipline, he formed his own landscape architecture practice, Austen Associates, in March 2007 taking a multi-disciplinary approach to the design of outdoor spaces.  His practice has strong skills and flair in the fields of landscape architecture, garden design (as Tim Austen Designs), landscape management and landscape ecology.  Tim also ensures that the planning and design aspects of his work are backed up by extensive contract management and supervision experience to deliver well-executed projects on the ground.

Having spent his formative years working in both Fern Hill Gardens, Co. Dublin and Charleville House, Co. Wicklow (arguably two of Ireland's great gardens), Tim's interest and desire is to create beautiful gardens using his own, now recognisable, design style with its roots in classical, romantic and naturalistic garden design. These influences along with his upbringing at the foot of the Sugarloaf Mountain in Co. Wicklow is evident in the colours, textures and forms that he brings in to his designs, whether they incorporate bold contemporary architecture or are predominantly natural in style. This approach resulted in him being awarded a gold medal and visitors’ favourite garden at the 2008 Bloom in the Park festival in Dublin and he repeated this success in 2009 with another gold medal and best large garden.

Tim’s recent experience includes landscape planning, design and project management work in both the public and private sectors and he has completed an extensive portfolio of private garden designs across Ireland.  He also undertook the first survey of biodiversity in gardens for Dublin City Council, as part of its Biodiversity Action Plan.  Tim is an active Member of the Irish Landscape Institute and was its Treasurer from 2005 to 2008.
